The Right Way to Pack Utensils: A Quick Guide for a Smooth Move

7/25/2025

Packing your kitchen can be tricky—especially when it comes to all the random utensils in your drawers. From everyday silverware to sharp knives and bulky tools, it’s easy to feel unsure about the best way to pack them.

This guide breaks down a simple, effective method to pack your utensils safely—so everything stays secure and organized from point A to point B.

Start with a Solid Box Foundation

Every good pack job starts with the box itself:

  • Fully assemble and tape the bottom of the box securely.
  • Crumple up some packing paper to create a thick, padded base.
  • This layer acts as a shock absorber and helps prevent items from shifting during the move.

Keep Silverware in Its Tray

Good news—there’s no need to dump your silverware out of the tray:

  • Set the entire tray on a sheet of packing paper.
  • Wrap it like a gift, folding the paper up and around it.
  • Tape it shut to keep everything in place.

When you unpack, simply remove the wrapped tray and place it directly into your new drawer. Easy.

Wrap Knives and Odd-Shaped Tools

For knives, peelers, and other sharp or awkward items:

  • Wrap each tool individually in packing paper or clean kitchen towels.
  • Group wrapped items together and tape into a bundle.
  • Keep all sharp ends pointed in the same direction and clearly label the bundle.

Fill in the Gaps

Gaps inside a box = movement during transport. You want a tight, secure pack:

  • Use crumpled packing paper to fill open spaces around trays, tools, or utensils.
  • No more rattling or bent items when you unpack.

Top Off the Box

Before sealing:

  • Leave a little room at the top and fill it with more crumpled paper.
  • Let the paper slightly overflow so the box closes snugly.

When taped shut, it should feel firm—not loose or hollow.

Final Packing Tips

  • Label clearly: “Kitchen – Utensils”
  • Add “Contains sharp items” if applicable.
  • If the box feels heavy, split it into two smaller boxes to prevent damage or strain.
