Your Week-by-Week Moving Checklist

7/21/2025

Stay on track, stress less, and get it done right.

Let’s be honest — moving to a new place can be equal parts exciting and exhausting. Between organizing, packing, scheduling, and remembering who to notify, it’s no wonder moving day can sneak up and feel chaotic.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

We’ve laid out a simple, week-by-week moving checklist to help you stay ahead of the stress. Whether you’re moving across the street or across the state, this guide will keep you focused and feeling in control.

8 Weeks Before the Move: Get Organized Early

You’re two months out — this is the perfect time to lay the groundwork.

  • Declutter your space. Go room by room and donate, sell, or toss anything you don’t use or need. Less to move = less to stress.
  • Start researching movers. Get at least 2–3 quotes, check Google reviews, and look for licensed, insured companies you trust.
  • Create a moving folder or Google Drive. Keep estimates, receipts, and to-do lists in one place.
  • Build a moving budget. Include moving services, boxes, packing materials, travel costs, and surprise expenses.

6 Weeks Before: Start Taking Action

Things are moving now — time to get hands-on.

  • Order packing supplies. Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers, labels — stock up early.
  • Pack up non-essentials. Think seasonal clothes, books, and décor you won’t need before the move.
  • Label every box. Include the destination room and a short list of contents. Color coding works great, too.
  • Plan for pets and plants. Will they travel with you or stay with a friend? Make those plans now.

4 Weeks Before: Make It Official

One month out — it’s time to lock things in.

  • Book your moving company. Don’t wait too long — good movers book up fast. Check out our moving services to get started.
  • Give notice if you rent. Most landlords require at least 30 days’ notice. Don’t lose your deposit over timing.
  • Update your address. Visit USPS.com and update it with your bank, DMV, and subscriptions.
  • Take time off work. Request your PTO now so you’re not scrambling later.

2 Weeks Before: Final Prep Mode

Two weeks to go — you’re almost there!

  • Set up utilities. Schedule shutoff and activation for water, power, internet, and gas.
  • Pack like a minimalist. Keep out what you’ll need over the next two weeks — box up everything else.
  • Back up important files. Save digital copies of key documents and work files before your computers are packed.
  • Confirm move details. Double-check your date, time, and addresses with the moving company.

1 Week Before: The Home Stretch

The big day is almost here. Time to finish strong.

  • Pack a “first night” kit. Include pajamas, toiletries, chargers, snacks, meds, and pet supplies.
  • Clean as you go. Tidy up each room as it’s packed to save time later.
  • Confirm helpers. Touch base with any friends or family lending a hand.
  • Disassemble furniture. Take apart beds, tables, and large items. Bag and label all screws and hardware.

Moving Day: Let’s Do This

You made it! Stay calm and power through the finish line.

  • Do a final walk-through. Open every drawer and check all closets before leaving.
  • Keep valuables with you. Important documents, jewelry, and irreplaceable items should stay in your vehicle.
  • Stay hydrated and pace yourself. Take breaks, drink water, and don’t overdo it.
  • Celebrate! Order takeout, kick back, and enjoy your new space.
