Tips for Packing Dishes for a Move

7/23/2025

Let’s be honest—packing your kitchen is probably one of the least fun parts of moving. And when it comes to dishes, it can also be the most nerve-wracking. Plates, bowls, mugs, glassware… they’re heavy, fragile, and if they’re not packed right, they’re the first thing to break.

But don’t worry—we’ve got your back. At Smart Move Moving and Storage, we’ve helped thousands of families move, and we’ve seen every kind of kitchen box you can imagine (including the good, the bad, and the shattered). Below, we’re sharing our top tips for packing dishes so everything arrives safe and sound.

Start with the Right Supplies

Having the right materials makes all the difference. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Dish packs: Heavy-duty, double-walled boxes made just for fragile kitchen items.
  • Packing paper: Soft, flexible paper for wrapping plates, bowls, and glassware.
  • Bubble wrap: Extra cushioning for delicate or high-value pieces.
  • Strong packing tape: Seal every edge tight—you don’t want a box busting open on the stairs.

If you don’t have time to shop for all that, we’ve got it ready for you. Check out our professional packing services—we bring the materials and the muscle.

Prep Your Packing Space

Find a clean, flat surface like a kitchen counter or dining table. Clear off anything you don’t need so you have room to work. It sounds simple, but setting up your space properly will make the whole process faster and less frustrating.

Reinforce Your Boxes

Before you even place a dish inside, reinforce the bottom of each box with an extra layer or two of tape. Then place a soft layer of crumpled packing paper at the bottom for added shock absorption.

How to Pack Your Dishes

📦 Plates

  • Wrap each plate individually with packing paper.
  • Stack them vertically in the box—like records, not pancakes. This helps prevent pressure cracks.

🥣 Bowls

  • Wrap each bowl on its own, then nest smaller ones inside larger ones with paper between them.
  • Make sure they’re cushioned well around the edges and in between.

☕ Cups & Mugs

  • Stuff each cup with crumpled paper to help it hold its shape.
  • Wrap the outside with paper or bubble wrap and store them upright.

🧱 Fill the Gaps

Once you’ve got a layer packed, fill any empty space with crumpled paper or soft cloths (dish towels work great). You want everything to feel snug—not crammed—so nothing shifts around during the move.

📑 Add Layers

After each row of dishes, add a new padded layer of paper before starting the next. This helps keep the weight balanced and items protected top to bottom.

Final Touches Before You Seal

When the box is full, add a final layer of cushioning, then seal the top securely with packing tape. Be sure to label it clearly: "Fragile – Kitchen – This Side Up".

Extra Tips for Success

  • Don’t overpack! Boxes should be heavy but still liftable.
  • Wrap oddly shaped or super-fragile items in bubble wrap and give them extra space.
  • If you’re doing multiple dish boxes, mix heavier and lighter pieces to balance the load.
